We understand that people from different cultural backgrounds could present their
mental health issues in different forms, and seek help in different ways than traditionally
understood in the West. It is based on such understanding that we are able to offer
assessments and structure appropriately designed through Trans-cultural psychotherapy
& counselling programmes to meet the specific needs of the client. We provide individually
structured psychotherapy and counselling programmes to meet the specific needs of
each client in a caring therapeutic environment. Our client will have immediate access
to a wide range of therapists and psychologists specialising in different fields.
It is now established that culture plays a major role in the onset and reasoning
of many mental health problems. Traditional beliefs and cultural mores characterise
the way people identify stress and the methods in which they seek help. For instance,
studies have shown that in some cultures, people suffering from depression and anxiety
can also present physical/psychosomatic symptoms. Today in Britain lives a myriad
of different cultural communities within which individuals can practice different
degrees of cultural, religious and traditional ways. The young and the adolescent
within these communities normally develop their own particular culture, which could
be different from those of the parents and the mainstream but include elements of
both.
Culturally based expectations and different elements of traditional practices could
lead to friction between members of families leading to stress, depression, anxiety
and even more serious mental health issues. At Samuel Maynard Centre our experienced
psychotherapists and counsellors provide culturally sensitive assessments to deal
with individual mental health issues as well as specifically tailored programmes
of therapy including Adolescent counselling and Family Therapy.
